The miracle worker told about the life of a blind and deaf girl named Hellen Keller. Her mother had been conscious of her daughter suffering since her daughter was baby. At first, her mother and her father was disappointed. So, Hellen Keller seems like a rough girl. It is because if she does not get what she wants, she will break anything she found. Finally, her parents decided to invite a teacher from the charitable institution named Anne Sullivant. In fact, Anne was a blind woman, so she tried hard to be able to see even though she has to drink a medicine very often. Based on her experience, Anne has a desire to examine Hellen to be a nice girl and she is able to understand many words. When the first time Anne came to Helen house, she taught her a first word – DOLL – by using the sign language (hand). Therefore, Hellen acquired her first word by touching Anne’ hand. Then, Heller imitated that sign language by her own hand. That learning is repeating very often. In another day, Anne found that Hellen ate some meals by standing. So, Anne wanted to teach her how the way someone eats. At first, that is going to be a hard matter because Hellen is not familiar with that habit. But, Anne repeated her instruction continuously even though it needs a long time. One day, Anne asked the parents to separate Hellen to stay in another home with her. It is because Anne wanted to teach Hellen closely in order to be able to change her bad habit and in order to acquire many words.
Based on that movie, Hellen Keller is one of the examples of blind and deaf girl who has an obstacle in acquiring her first language. But, the teacher – Anne – teaches them through the appropriate methods. Anne used the sign language (by hand) and by repetition very often. Anne is a patience teacher in teaching Hellen. Therefore, day by day, Hellen is able to comprehend the language by always imitating what her teacher did.
The film of The Miracle Worker makes me aware that every child has their own way in acquiring the language, especially a blind and deaf child like Hellen Keller. Therefore, as a language teacher, we should know first the ability that the children have, and then we can improve that ability in acquiring the language.
